Stump Grinding in Newport News, VA
A leftover stump is a trip hazard, a mowing headache, and a home for insects and fungus. Alvarez Tree Service grinds stumps in Newport News so the space can go back to being lawn, garden, or patio.
How Stump Grinding Works
A stump grinder uses a spinning cutting wheel to chew the wood into mulch, working side to side and a little deeper on each pass. We grind below the surface of the soil, then fill the hole with the chips and loose dirt. The main roots near the stump are ground out as far as is practical. Smaller roots farther out are left to break down naturally, which is normal and not a problem for the new grass or plantings.
Why Grind Instead of Dig
Pulling a stump out with an excavator tears up a large area and leaves a crater. Grinding is quicker, cleaner, and easier on the lawn, sprinklers, and fences around it. For most Newport News yards, where the stump sits behind a fence or between a house and a neighbor, grinding is the practical choice because the machine can reach tight spots.
Before We Arrive
Please mark or tell us about anything buried near the stump, such as irrigation lines, pet fencing, or low-voltage lighting. Virginia has a free 811 service for locating public utilities, and we ask customers to make sure that is handled on any job that needs it. Private lines are not marked by 811, so tell us what you know.
After the Grind
Expect a mound of wood chips where the stump used to be. You can use them as mulch around beds, let them settle and top with soil before seeding, or ask us to haul them away. If the stump came from a tree we removed, we can usually grind it on the same visit.
Stump Grinding in Newport News: Common Questions
How deep do you grind?
We grind below the soil line, deep enough that grass or plants can go over the spot. If you plan a patio, footing, or new tree, tell us so we can plan the depth.
Can I plant right after grinding?
You can reseed or sod once the area is filled and leveled. For a new tree, planting a short distance from the old stump is better than planting in the grindings.
What happens to the wood chips?
You can keep them as mulch, rake them out, or ask us to haul them away.
